A festival for Franz Schubert. The thinking and ambition of the first Schubertiade, which was initiated in 1976 by Hermann Prey in Hohenems, was to grant the man a fitting place alongside Mozart and Beethoven. The town in Austria's Vorarlberg region quickly evolved to become one of the best known festival venues and a popular meeting point for an international audience, one which sought to bring together outstanding artists in an accessible setting. In place of an arbitrary, standardised festival programme, its definition was clear – to ensure an uncompromising commitment to Franz Schubert. These days the Schubertiade, which has some 80 events and 35,000 visitors annually, has become the world's most renowned Schubert festival. Nowhere else within such a short space of time is there such a large number of song recitals, by the best performers in the world, on the agenda. Top notch chamber concerts and piano evenings are another emphasis. This is supplemented by orchestral concerts, readings and lectures, along with master classes from eminent figures in the art world.

Schattenburg is a hill-top castle, above the town of Feldkirch in Vorarlberg in Austria and is connected to this region by the former town walls. The medieval castle is one the best maintained castles in Central Europe.

With the opening of the world's largest Rolls Royce museum, Franz Vonier, a mountain farmer's son from the Montafon region, demonstrated that there are not just 'self-made men' in the USA. He revealed this for the first time when he left the mountains. "Wealthy lords cam here with their expensive cars; in came the farmers, stooped over, pouring water into their coolers". Vonier realised two things: cars are the future - being stooped over isn't.

Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen is the abbey library of the former Benedictine Monastery of St. Gall. It originated from the cell that the Irish monk St. Gallus set up around 612 in the Steinach valley.
